Five Layers of the Epidermis

1. Stratum Basale/Gerinativum
-The layer capable of undergoing mitosis.
-The deepest layer.
-Made up of keratinocytes.

2. Stratum Spinosum
-Several layers of spiny-shaped cells.

3. Stratum Granulosum
-Where cells die.
-Flattened cells that have lost their nuclei.

4. Stratum Lucidum
-Found only in thick skin (palms and soles of feet)
-1-2 layers of flat transparent cells.

5. Stratum Corenum
-The outermost layer of the epidermis.
-Up to 25 layers of dead, dry keratin rich cells
-Serves as a barrier.
